Blur the background of a photo
Planned as a local AI tool: keep the subject sharp and soften everything behind it.

This tool is on the roadmap. The page is here so the workflow, formats and related tools are documented — but nothing is processed and no result is produced.
A shallow depth of field is what separates a portrait from a snapshot. Phones fake it with a depth map; on an arbitrary photo you have to infer the subject first.
Because the blur itself is a straightforward canvas operation, the only hard part is the mask — which shares its model with background removal. Both ship together when local inference is ready.
What you get
Adjustable blur strength
Subtle separation or a strong bokeh look, controlled by a slider rather than a preset.
Local segmentation
Uses the same on-device model as background removal, so the photo stays on your machine.
Non-destructive
Applied as an operation in the editor history, so it can be undone.
How it works
- 1
Subject mask
The segmentation model produces a mask separating subject from background.
- 2
Blur the background layer
A canvas blur is applied to everything outside the mask.
- 3
Composite and export
The sharp subject is drawn back over the blurred background.
Specifications
- This tool is not implemented yet. Nothing is processed, no image is uploaded, and no result is produced. The page documents the intended workflow and is excluded from search indexing until the feature actually works.
- Planned as Tier B (local AI). Shares its segmentation model with Remove Background.
Why use KaiConvert
- No upload for local tools
- Works offline once the page is loaded
- Cloud AI is always clearly labelled before you start
