Sizing the image yourself first means you choose the framing and the platform’s encoder has an easier job. The presets here cover the sizes that actually matter: 1080 × 1080 and 1080 × 1350 for feeds, 1080 × 1920 for stories and reels, 1280 × 720 for thumbnails, 1200 × 628 for link previews.
